The Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, passed away on Tuesday night.
His death came as a surprise after he paid a courtesy call on President Muhammadu Buhari at his Aso Rock Palace in Abuja on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by a delegation of OPEC leaders.

Sanusi Barkindo visited the Nigerian presidential palace on Tuesday at around 11 am.
He was bidding farewell to President Buhari to step down as chairman of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
President Buhari has instructed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to host a reception for Sunusi Barkindo.
President Buhari told him: "Your rule in OPEC has been full of challenges, as the world is suffering from the economic crisis of the oil industry.
"However, you have shown great resilience in your leadership," said President Buhari.
NNPC President Mele Kyari was among those who accompanied Barkindo to President Buhari's palace.
In his remarks, Barkido attributed his achievements to OPEC to the advice and support he received from President Buhari and the cooperation of OPEC members.
"I have been in contact with you many times, as a former OPEC expert," said Sunusi Barkindo.
He added that in every country in the world as OPEC Secretary General, the first question my president asks me is "Where is my brother President Buhari"?
He thanked President Buhari for the opportunity to lead OPEC, and promised that Nigeria would continue to maintain its recognized position in the organization.
